Can Massage Therapy Ease Muscle Inflammation?

Massage Therapy May Be Able To Help with Muscle Inflammation

Physical exercise often results in microscopic muscle injury with its associated soreness, decreased range of motion, pain, and inflammation, particularly with high force or repetitive muscle contractions. Massage therapy may be an effective treatment for exercise-induced injury and is often recommended. Recent research studies have shown that massage may contribute to a reduction of post-exercise inflammation.

In a recently published article entitled, “Brief 10-Minute Massage Helps Reduce Inflammation in Muscle,” News Medical Life Sciences writes:

“Researchers at McMaster University have discovered a brief 10-minute massage helps reduce inflammation in muscle. As a non-drug therapy, massage holds the potential to help not just bone-weary athletes but those with inflammation-related chronic conditions, such as arthritis or muscular dystrophy.”

The author also suggests that massage could be useful to a broad spectrum of individuals, including older adults, those suffering from musculoskeletal injuries, and patients with chronic inflammatory disease. Massage could be used as actual medical practice in these cases.
