Dr. Donald Smith, DC has been a chiropractor for 26 years. He is the owner of Spencerport Chiropractic, where he provides chiropractic and massage therapy services. He runs his multi-modality clinic as a solo provider.
I’ve been a chiropractor for 26 years. For the last 10, I’ve run my clinic completely on my own. No front desk. No office manager. Just me, my patients, and the systems I rely on to keep things moving.
For most of that time, I used the same practice management software. It wasn’t exciting, but it worked. I could chart, schedule appointments, and handle insurance. Nothing fancy, but it worked well enough. I became comfortable with it. And honestly? The thought of switching to something new felt intimidating. When your whole clinic runs through one system, changing it feels like pulling out the foundation.
So I stayed. Year after year. I told myself, if it's not broken, don't fix it.
Then last year, I expanded my clinic and added massage therapy. And that’s when everything started to fall apart.
Adding two massage therapists to my practice seemed like a natural next step. Chiropractic and massage complement each other. Many of my patients were already asking for it. The clinical fit made sense.

What didn't make sense was my software.
My old system didn’t support electronic SOAP notes for massage at all. So we had to work around it. We printed a blank SOAP form. The therapist filled it out by hand. Then I scanned it. Then I uploaded it into the patient file.
Every single time.
For every massage appointment.
The paperwork started piling up fast. The process slowed everything down. Documentation became messy and inconsistent. I was spending more time on admin work than I wanted to admit.
We also wanted to offer massage packages and yearly memberships. That wasn’t possible either. The system just couldn’t handle it.
I knew pretty early on that this wasn’t going to work long term. There wasn’t one big breaking point. It was the small things adding up. Every handwritten note. Every scan. Every manual upload.
After 10 years of sticking with what felt familiar, I finally admitted it. I had outgrown my software.
Once I accepted that it was time to switch, I got very clear on what I actually needed. I wasn’t browsing for fun. I had a short, practical list.
First, I needed proper SOAP notes for both chiropractic and massage. Fully digital notes. No paper. No scanning. Just clean electronic documentation that both I and my massage therapists could use without workarounds.
I also needed online scheduling that made sense for patients. Something simple and modern that let them book on their own, without calling or emailing back and forth.
Insurance mattered too. I submit claims and upload remittances through Office Ally, so any new system had to work with that. No exceptions.
Customization was another big one. Every clinic runs a little differently. I wanted the flexibility to set things up the way we actually work. Package and membership tracking were important as well, especially for managing massage programs.
But there was one more reality I couldn’t ignore. I run my clinic solo. That meant the system had to be easy to learn and easy to manage on my own. And it had to be affordable. I wasn’t interested in paying for extra features I’d never touch.
I looked at several options. Clinic Sense, Jane App, and a few others I can't even remember the names of now.
The same problem kept coming up. Some did chiropractic well but couldn't handle massage. Some were built for massage but didn't understand chiropractic workflows. A few were so clunky and confusing that I couldn’t imagine using them every day.
There were a couple I knew about but didn't even consider. ChiroTouch, for example. I'd had past experience with systems like that. Too expensive. Too complex. And honestly, not worth another look.
What I kept running into was this gap. Systems were either too medical and clunky, too basic and limited, or just not built for a clinic that does both chiropractic and massage together.
I started to wonder if what I needed even existed.
When I found Noterro, I could tell within minutes that it was built with real clinic workflows in mind.
Ease of use stood out immediately. The system was intuitive and user friendly. I didn't have to fight with it to figure out how things worked.
Customization was another big plus. I could set things up the way our clinic actually operates. Not force our workflow into someone else's rigid template.
The SOAP notes worked for both chiropractic and massage, and they were fully digital. No more printing, handwriting, scanning, and uploading. My massage therapists finally had proper electronic documentation. That alone was worth the switch.
When I learned that Noterro could submit insurance claims to Office Ally, that helped me make the decision. After I signed up, they added remittance uploads as well. I wasn’t expecting that, but it made posting payments much easier.
The patient side was solid too. The app looked clean and professional. Online booking was simple. And here's something my patients really appreciated: they could cancel or reschedule online themselves. With my old system, they had to call or text the office for any changes. Now they handle it on their own.
Packages and memberships were easy to set up and track. I could finally manage our massage programs the way I’d always wanted to.
And the price? Lower than I expected. More features, less cost. That made the decision a lot easier.
Switching software after 10 years is intimidating. There’s no way around that. You’re moving your entire practice into something new. There’s a learning curve. There are questions. And there are moments where you’re not sure how something works yet.
What made the transition easier was the support. It was wonderful. I had one on one demos and tutorials. When I emailed questions, I got quick, thoughtful replies. Even when I shared suggestions, the team listened. It felt like real support, not canned responses.
I also need to mention Lucy. That's the AI self-help assistant built into the system. Most of the time, I can just ask Lucy what I need and get an answer right away. No waiting. No digging through help articles. I ask a question and move on with my day.
For a solo provider like me, that kind of support matters. I don't have staff to figure things out. I need to get answers and get back to patients. Noterro made that part easy.
Within the first week, I knew I'd made the right call.
Patients liked the app and portal. They appreciated the ability to do more with scheduling. Online booking became effortless. Being able to reschedule on their own took a lot off my plate. The clinic felt more modern almost overnight.
We're still new to the system, so most patients haven't explored everything yet. Things like billing history, invoices, or note requests will come with time. But the early feedback told me I was on the right track.
And my massage therapists? They finally have proper digital SOAP notes. No more handwritten forms. No more scanning. The documentation is clean, consistent, and fast.
Today, I run both chiropractic and massage on one system. Everything lives in one place.
I work efficiently as a solo provider. The workflows make sense. The documentation stays consistent. Claims go out. Remittances come back. Patients book and reschedule themselves.
All the paper bottlenecks are gone. The printing, handwriting, scanning, and uploading routine is gone with them.
The clinic stays organized without a front desk. I keep everything running on my own.

And here's what matters most. The time I save on admin work gives me more time with patients. Or it lets me go home earlier.
After 26 years in practice, that's not a small thing.
What used to be a 10-year habit became a 10-year upgrade.
Most people don't like change. I get it. I was the same way.
You get comfortable. The idea of switching feels overwhelming. So you stick with what you know, even when it’s no longer helping you.
If what you have works for you and you're happy with it, great. There’s no reason to change.
But if you’ve ever had that quiet thought about seeing what else is out there, it’s worth listening to it.
Every clinic is different. Some software will fit better than others. You don’t know until you look.
I’m glad I took the time to explore my options. And I’m glad I landed on Noterro. Compared to systems I’ve used before, and there have been a few, Noterro gives me more flexibility and features at a much lower cost. It saves me time. Reduces stress. And gives me room to grow.
That makes it an easy decision.
If you’ve been on the same software for years, there’s a good chance it’s holding you back without you realizing it. The moment your clinic grows or adds new modalities, you'll feel the strain.
Noterro is the first system I've used that actually supports how a modern clinic works.
